How much water should you drink before saunagus?

January 1, 2025

It is important to stay hydrated when going in a sauna, because you sweat a lot and can get dehydrated fast. When you are hydrated, the water balance in your body is in a state where it can optimally function.

The body can normally absorb water with a speed of approximately 0,5 to 1 liter per hour. This means that if you drink more than this within an hour, the excess water can probably not be absorbed and will result in more trips to the toilet.

We generally recommend drinking around 0,5 to 1 liter within two hours up to a Saunagus, this varies depending on the person's bodyweight, level of activity and how much they normally sweat. Most importantly we in Plugin recommend that you add electrolytes, that you can buy at the pharmacy or online.

What does it mean to be hydrated?

When you properly hydrate your body, the water balance helps your body to a state where it can function optimally. To be hydrated means that your body has enough water to maintain normal body functions and health. Other than drinking enough water you can also get hydration through your foods like fruit, vegetables, soup and other water rich dishes and foods.

When do I know that I have had enough water and are well hydrated?

Signs that you have had enough water to drink and is well hydrated includes:

A general feeling of wellbeing without symptoms of dehydration like dryness of the mouth, mild nausea, headache, dizziness or tiredness.

A normal and clear colored urine.

Normal fluid intake without excessive thirst.

To obtain an appropriate hydration implies not only drinking water but also having focus on your diet because many foods contain water and can add to your overall hydration.

A very important detail regarding intense use of sauna, like for example Saunagus, is that during a Saunagus you are not only losing fluids but also a significant amount of electrolytes. Electrolytes are very important for the body to regulate several vital processes. These minerals which include sodium, calcium, potassium, magnesium, chloride and phosphate are found in body fluids and help to maintain a healthy balance of fluids in the cells and in the body overall.

You can read more here about what electrolytes are good for and how much you should take after saunagus in this blogpost.

Water substitutes

We offer several different drinks in the Plugin zone. You can bring your own water bottle and fill it at the reception, before a Saunagus session. We also have electrolytes from Wellexir that you can buy and add to your water. If you need something different from water, or want to sit around after a session to socialize with a drink, you can buy sparkling water from NODA or kombucha from Folk.

Wellexir Flow Hydration drink is developed by leading nutrition experts in collaboration with experienced athletes for optimized absorption of liquid and minerals during physical exercise or under warm conditions.

Enjoy Wellexir Flow whenever you want to give your body some extra water and electrolytes or if you wish to upgrade your water with a bit of a flavor for a low-calorie sports drink. Wellexir is not just electrolytes, but also contains your daily value of vitamin C and B12 and probiotics for gut health.

NODA is different. None of the usual soda ingredients – NODA is 100% free from refined sugar, sweeteners, preservatives and all other additives. NODA is sparkling water with 30% real pressed fruit. Always organic, up to 70% fewer calories than a soda. NODA is real fruit, real taste and low calorie.

With great respect for the traditional craft, Folk seeks to reimagine what a kombucha can be, by defining new principles of brewing and setting new standards for the taste and quality of the beverage. From bottling to brewing, all aspects of production are carried out in our Copenhagen brewery, to craft the best unpasteurized, living kombucha possible.

Kombucha is known to be rich in various bioactive compounds, including acetic and gluconic acid, complex B vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and polyphenols. Additionally, kombucha contains L-Theanine, a nootropic found in tea that is gaining attention for its cognitive enhancing properties.
